Root Canal Myths Debunked

Root canals have a bad reputation. If you haven’t had a root canal, you might have heard that the procedure is painful, risky, or a waste of time. In this blog post we’ll explore these three misconceptions about this incredibly common procedure.

Root Canals Aren’t Painful

You heard that right, you won’t be in excruciating pain during or after your root canal procedure, as you may have imagined. The root canal is a common procedure that has been performed since the first half of the 19th century. A lot has changed since then, and pain is much more manageable today than it was nearly 200 years ago. Modern technology allows for today’s root canal procedure to come with minimal pain–no more than you’d feel during a cavity filling. Local anesthetics are used to numb the area during the procedure, and pain meds can manage any follow up pain.

Minimal Risk

Another rumor that is likely rooted in the long history of the procedure is that a root canal procedure can make you sick. Today, this claim is just completely false. Root canals are a safe and routine procedure, with little to no risk for complications. After a root canal you’ll recover quickly, with minimal pain lasting only for a few days following the surgery, at most.

A Worthwhile Procedure

If you’ve heard it said that you should have your tooth pulled rather than receive a root canal, you’ve been lied to. If the natural tooth can be salvaged, that’s always the best option. Although there are incredibly realistic restorations available these days, nothing beats the real thing.
